A note on salinity and temperature in some Moroccan brackish waters OMA
Heip, C.H.R.; De Coninck, L.A.P.; Engels, P.; Engler, G.; Verschueren, G..
A series of measures of temperature and salinity was made in different brackish waters along the Atlantic coast of Morocco. All waters examined were polyhaline, except for a series of hyperhaline salt mines. The importance of temperature in the sediment is discussed: temperature in the top layer may rise considerably (7° C) above air temperature. However, in the deeper layers, temperature is lower than in the air and the water.

A note on the life-span of r-strategists OMA
Heip, C.H.R..
The idea is presented that the short life-span of <i>r</i>-strategists may in some cases be an adaptation to avoid predation. Evidence supporting this hypothesis is presented by examination of predation of the polyp <i>Protohydra leuckarti</i> on harpacticoid copepods.

A preliminary study of the marine algal communities on the islands of Milos and Sikinos (Cyclades-Greece) OMA
Coppejans, E..
This marine-phytosociological study of the two islands of Milos (1971) and Sikinos (1972), both belonging to the Cyclades, gives a general idea of the algal vegetation of the Aegean Sea. Comparative observations in the field as well as the analysis of many transects and the identification of collected material contributed to the recognition of some algal communities. The existence of other seasonal communities (especially winter ones) was indicated by the occurrence of a poor summer-aspect. Ecological requirements (such as light, exposure and slope) of the different algal communities were recorded and their vertical distribution was obtained from the transect data. Comparisons between these observations and conclusions were made with those of other authors...

A quantitative evaluation of the impact of beam trawling on benthic fauna in the southern North Sea OMA
Piet, G.J.; Rijnsdorp, A.D.; Bergman, M.J.N.; van Santbrink, J.W.; Craeymeersch, J.A.; Buijs, J..
Data on density of benthos species and on direct mortality caused by the passing of a beam trawl, together with fishing effort data for the Dutch beam-trawl fleet, were used to evaluate the annual population mortality caused by beam trawling in the Dutch sector of the North Sea. The effects of using environmental strata, instead of ICES rectangles for density distributions, and of using higher-resolution fishing-effort data on the population mortality estimates of 21 infauna and epifauna species were investigated. Variation in species abundance was markedly smaller based on sediment-depth strata than based on ICES rectangles, and the resulting population mortality estimates differed significantly among species (ratio ranged from 0.3 to 1.6) depending on...

A rapid method of extracting meiobenthic nematodes and copepods from mud and detritus OMA
Heip, C.H.R.; Smol, N.; Hautekiet, W..
The extraction of nematodes and harpacticoid copepods from muddy sediments or sediments containing a large amount of organic detritus can be achieved through a series of centrifugations of the material in a sacharose solution of at least 900 g/l. The number of individuals appearing in the supernatant after each centrifugation forms a geometric series, with a ratio which is dependent on the amount of material, the concentration of the saccharose solution, and the acceleration of the centrifuge. Knowledge of this ratio allows an estimation of density after only one centrifugation. More than 90 % of the animals present in the sample can be extracted after only two centrifugations.

A reappraisal of the systematics of the Monocelididae (Platyhelminthes, Proseriata): inferences from rDNA sequences OMA
Litvaitis, M.K.; Curini-Galletti, M.C.; Martens, P.M.; Kocher, T.D..
The current classification system for the Monocelididae which is based on the character "presence or absence of an accessory prostatoid organ" divides the family into two subfamilies, namely the Minoninae and the Monocelididinae. However, other characters relating to the structure of the male copulatory bulb and to karyotypes do not support this division. Monocelidid male copulatory bulbs can be either of the simplex or the duplex-type, and if this character is mapped onto the current classification, then both subfamilies contain species with either type of copulatory bulb. We therefore decided to construct an independent phylogeny for the Monocelididae using nucleotide-sequence data of the gene coding for the 26/28S rDNA. Distance and parsimony-based...

A reassessment of <i>Paralimnocythere</i> Carbonnel, 1965 (Crustacea, Ostracoda, Limnocytherinae), with a description of a new genus and two new species OMA
Martens, K..
The Recent and Fossil species of <i>Paralimnocythere</i> are reassessed and the genus is characterized using both soft part and valve morphology. Seventeen species, of which eleven have living representatives, are here retained. <i>Relictocytherina</i> Negadaev-Nikonov, 1968 is confirmed as a synonym of <i>Paralimnocythere; R. orginalis</i> (Negadaev-Nikonov, 1965), the type species is furthermore synonymous with <i>P. relicta</i> (Lilljeborg, 1863). <i>Paralimnocythere psammmophila</i> (Flössner, 1965) and <i>P. compressa</i> (Brady & Norman, 1889) are both reinstated as valid species, quite different from <i>P. relicta</i>. All Recent Balkan species are retained as...

A redescription of <i>Cumoniscus</i> Bonnier, 1903 (Crustacea: Tantulocarida) from a cumacean host in the Bay of Biscay OMA
Huys, R.; Boxshall, G.; Casnova, J.-P..
Cumoniscus kruppi Bonnier, the only tantulocarid known from a cumacean host, is redescribed from a tantulus larva collected from the Bay of Biscay. The host is a male leuconid cumacean. This genus is placed in the family Deoterthridae, and can be distinguished from other genera by the pore pattern on the cephalic shield, the reduced setae on the sixth legs and the presence of tiny curved spinules on the endopod of thoracopods 2 to 5.

A redescription of the presumed associated <i>Caligopsyllus primus</i> Kunz, 1975 (Harpacticoida, Paramesochridae) with emphasis on its phylogenetic affinity with <i>Apodopsyllus</i> Kunz, 1962 OMA
Huys, R..
<i>Caligopsyllus primus</i> Kunz, 1975, reported from tidal pools near East London (South Africa), is redescribed and figured on the basis of type material. An amended diagnosis of the genus <i>Caligopsyllus</i> Kunz, 1975 is presented. Cladistic analysis falsified the hypothesis of a close relationship between <i>Caligopsyllus</i> and <i>Kliopsyllus</i> Kunz, 1962, favouring instead a link with <i>Apodopsyllus</i> Kunz, 1962. The morphological modifications are discussed within the context of a possible ecto-associated life-style. Finally, a standard format of abbreviations and terminology is proposed for the paramesochrid caudal ramus.

A re-evaluation of marine nematode productivity OMA
Vranken, G.; Herman, P.M.J.; Vincx, M.; Heip, C.H.R..
Nematodes are the most abundant multicellular animals in marine sediments but their role in the benthos has not been properly quantified yet. In nearly all energy-flow budgets of marine systems their annual production P is given as about nine times their biomass B and their part in the total energy-flow is consequently estimated as anywhere between 3 and 30% of the total (carbon) input in the benthic system. Our laboratory experiments demonstrate that nematode productivity is much higher than P/B ~ 9 per year and may reach values of over 60 for bacterial grazers. To obtain more reliable estimates for field populations we propose a regression equation relating egg-to-egg development time Tmin to temperature (t) and adult female weight...

A revision of <i>Cylinula</i> and two new species of <i>Cylindropsyllus</i> (Copepoda, Harpacticoida, Cylindropsyllidae) OMA
Huys, R.; Willems, K..
Males of two new species of Cylindropsyllus Brady, 1880 (Cylindropsyllidae) are described. Cylindropsyllus ibericus sp. n. is based on a single specimen from Portugal previously misidentified as C. laevis Brady, 1880; C. govaerei sp. n. is reported from Corsican shell-gravel. The boreomediterranean distribution of C. laevis is confirmed and a key to the species of Cylindropsyllus is presented. Redescriptions are provided for the two species of Cylinula Coull, 1971, the type species C. proxima Coull, 1971 and C. arganoi Cottarelli and Venanzetti, 1989. The relationships of Cylindropsyllus, Cylinula and Evansula Sars, 1909 are briefly discussed.

A revision of <i>Danielssenia</i> Boeck and <i>Psammis</i> Sars with the establishment of two new genera <i>Archisenia</i> and <i>Bathypsammis</i> (Harpacticoida: Paranannopidae) OMA
Huys, R.; Gee, M..
Archisenia gen. nov. is proposed to accommodate the sibirica-group of the genus Danielssenia Boeck, 1872. Re-examination of Alaskan material of D. stefanssoni Willey, 1920 has shown the latter species to be a junior synonym of D. sibirica Sars, 1898, the type and only species of the new genus. Danielssenia robusta Sars, 1921 and Fladenia intermedia (Wells, 1965) are synonymous and consequently F. robusta comb. nov. becomes the type species of the genus Fladenia Gee & Huys, 1990. Danielssenia similis Chislenko, 1971 is regarded as species inquirenda and the genus Danielssenia is redefined from the type species D. typica Boeck, 1872, and two other species (D. quadriseta Gee, 1988 and D. reducta Gee, 1988). The status of D. fusiformis (Brady, 1880) nec...

A revision of the genus <i>Laophontina</i> Norman & T. Scott (Copepoda, Harpacticoida) OMA
Fiers, F..
The genus <i>Laophontina</i> is revised after re-examination of the typeseries of the species and analyses of new materials from the East African coast and the Caribbean. The genus <i>Laophontina</i> as redefined herein unifies <i>L. dubia, L. acantha, L. noodti,</i> and <i>L. posidoniae</i>. The recently described <i>L. paradubia</i> is considered as conspecific with <i>L. dubia</i>. All other species presently assembled in the genus are allocated to different genera. <i>Galapalaophonte</i> is redefined and comprises <i>G. pacifica, G. triarticulata</i> and <i>G. variabilis</i> besides four new species. <i>Laophontina distincta</i> and...

A revision of Thompsonulidae Lang, 1944 (Copepoda: Harpacticoida) OMA
Huys, R.; Gee, J.M..
The harpacticoid copepod subfamily Thompsonulinae Lang, 1944, formerly recognized as belonging to the family Tachidiidae (Lang, 1948) is raised to family rank and redefined to include only the genera Thompsonula T. Scott and Caribbula gen. nov. Thompsonula hyaenae (I. C. Thompson) and T. curticauda (Wilson) are redescribed and refigured. Re-examination of the original material showed that Wilson's Rathbunula agilis is synonymous with T. curticauda and not with T. hyaenae, as suggested by Lang (1948). It is now clear that the two species of Thompsonula have distinct distributions, T. curticauda being confined to the North American continent and T. hyaenae to western Europe and the Mediterranean. The genus Caribbula is established to accommodate the type...

A room temperature procedure for the manual determination of urea in seawater OMA
Goeyens, L.; Kindermans, N.; Yusuf, M.A.; Elskens, M..
Several earlier studies underpin the important role of dissolved organic matter and more particularly urea in phytoplanktonic nitrogen uptake fluxes. Generally, the determination of urea concentrations relies on the formation of an imidazolone-thiosemicarbizide complex, a complexation which requires very accurate temperature control when carried out at high temperature. It is also possible, however, to obtain reliable results with a room temperature procedure. The measured abundances for both complexation at high temperature (85 degree C, 20 min) and at ambient temperature (22 degree C, 72 h) are closely comparable. Lower values are observed for temperatures <10 degree C though. Moreover, a comparison of both techniques reveals similar precision...

A seasonally varying biotope at Signy Island, Antarctic: implications for meiofaunal structure OMA
Vanhove, S.; Beghyn, M.; Van Gansbeke, D.; Bullough, L.W.; Vincx, M..
Under the typical high-latitude conditions of temperature, productivity and settlement of chlorophyll and phaeophytin to the sediment, many benthic organisms in the Antarctic show strong seasonal variation. Although meiofauna comprise an important component of the southpolar benthic ecosystem, our knowledge of them is limited. The metazoan meiofauna and the surrounding sediments were studied fortnightly for 18 mo in a shallow bay at Signy Island (Factory Cove, South Orkneys, Antarctica) to test whether and how the temporal variability of the environment influenced meiobenthos dynamics. By examination of the distribution of the abundance and biomass of the total community, the density of higher taxonomic groups, and of individual dominant nematode genera...
